The initial inspiration behind this painting was stunning magnolia flowers against a blue sky. After a holiday in the lake district, where there were magnolias in bloom down the whole road, I felt compelled to capture their beauty in a painting. Initially, I was expecting a more refined result, but as I added the abstract background and interesting marks, I felt they told the story and brought movement into the piece. Using complimentary colours I wanted to bring a bold, yet delicate edge to this magnolia painting. I used heavy, bold brush strokes with lots of paint to add texture. I feel that the soft edges and colours bring an ethereal feel.
